Waterstop is used to seal joints in vertical and horizontal concrete panels to prevent groundwater from penetrating or, in some cases, to keep water retained. There are multiple different types of materials used for this purpose. We’ll provide information on the types of waterstop here:
Non-swelling (PVC): As the shorthand implies, this type of waterstop is commonly made of PVC or rubber material and placed in the joint between concrete panels. This material is usually tied into the rebar mat of the concrete panel at a joint, and then cement is poured overtop to create a permanent barrier. The type of this waterstop that Triumph offers is JP Specialties and Dura Joint. Depending on your needs or specifications, this can come in various shapes and sizes.
Swelling (hydrophilic): This type is made out of bentonite or a hydrophilic material, which swells when it makes contact with water in cement. These products serve the same purpose and have an adhesive backing, allowing them to stick to a cured concrete slab to pour cement on top. Our company carries Bentoswell and Adeka, with Bentoswell being bentonite-based while Adeka has a hydrophilic compound.
Metallic (Retrofit/RX): This waterstop is usually made out of stainless steel and would be placed in a joint to have cement poured on top. Retrofit is designed to provide a fluid-tight seal between existing concrete and new concrete construction.
